Yeah, Tom Tom is finally getting this right after all kinds of problems. Once a week (if you choose) you get prompted to download a 1 meg'ish patch. You can do it anywhere and it patches the existing stored maps, no live feed necessary. Takes about 5 seconds.
You do need live feed for traffic, but of course, that is the whole point of that.
BTW, their traffic is awesome now and the routing bugs are finally fixed. Also, their crowd sourced arrival times are the most accurate on any of the platforms and it consistently chooses the shortest route.
I was a Garmin lover and wanted it to desperately come to the iphone, but not with maps like this. Now that Tom Tom is finally getting it right, I won't be getting this.

I felt the same way as Woz when the iPad was first announced. A great product for my wife but not for me, I need my macbook.
Then I was assigned to develop iPad apps and got one. My wife still doesn't have one, but I won't leave home without mine. I can remote into my home or work mac when needed, have all my music and video and docs with me always.

They rated it as their BEST smartphone, but said they wouldn't recommend it.

It makes perfect sense when you understand that "recommend" is a special term when it comes to Consumer Reports. They weren't telling people not to buy it. They just weren't giving it their highest "recommended" seal of approval.

Nothing, directly. I was responding to a previous comment as you can see. There is an indirect connection to the cartoonist issue. My feeling is that there's a general failure to understand why Apple has a restrictive policy regarding what types of apps can appear in the app store. My post addressed the issue regarding the prohibition of pornography, instead of the issue of what defines an app with defamatory content as was the case with the cartoonist. There's also, in my opinion, a failure to appreciate that the lack of consistency in the app approval process is a result of Apple being unable to anticipate every scenario and nuance that is presented by certain apps, and the fact that Apple hires people to review apps. You can't realistically expect different people to always agree on situations that are slightly different. In order to respond to the explosion of submitted apps, Apple must have had to hire a lot of new reviewers. That means that you may have less control over the quality and experience level of the people that you have working as reviewers.

A developer friend of mine tried to download the previous dev release for my system (iMac G5), but it wouldn't install right for some reason. It would hang on restart. I had to re-install from the CD and re-update everything. Even tried disabling all my hacks and startup items, but it just did it again. I believe it was the combo version (2117 I think). I'm thinking it didn't get download right or something though, because he was able to get it working on his (Intel and PPC), a friend of our's (dual G5 PowerMac), and my Mother's (Intel mini). Hoping the new one works better, but if not, at least I know how to fix it. :rolleyes: When it works though, it's fast. Real fast.

This girl must have you star-struck, eh? Sending messages over to other computers in the apple store is difficult. They always have these odd names for ichat/bonjour services, so it's not likely you'll be able to do this on your first try. You could be sending a message to another GUY somwhere in the store for all you know.

If I go there again I am not going to avoid her, I would hope she doesn't feel the urge to avoid me considering I haven't done anything to her, and frankly shopping doesn't require purchases, so I shouldn't be forced to only enter the store when I have a need to purchase, I like to browse. I would not at all be pissed if she dated someone else, for all I know she could be right now and that is great for her. I simply thought she was an attractive and interesting person, and since I have a poor history of initiating contact with women I like, I thought I would ask around. I don't take offense to much, this is no exception so no worries on that front. They certainly didn't promise it for the fall. They left quite a window, didn't they say 1H07? Let them get it right with good testing. With earlier Tiger revisions, I just went back to 10.3 until they had enough things working right. This will also be the longest time between major revisions, so that's probably going to mean more minor revisions.

Apps all run in the same format and screen size. Even the new retina display is only an enlargement of the original format, but shown at the higher resolution. Apps running on the iPad run at the native format, or specifically for the iPad format, which is different code.
If Apple introduced a different sized screen, that would be a pain to the installed base and app developer. For this reason, I don't think it is true.
Is it not possible that perhaps you could have a smaller screen with a higher pixel density than the 3G and thus the same resolution in order to prevent this issue?

sounds like the stuff under that key is all gunked up. clean it out and see what you can. tho i don't know how deep the damage is as far as the mobo goes. i would check that out and maybe use some rubbing alcohol and clean off the mobo and see what it does. TAKE ALL THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. idk how well my advice will work as i don't know how bad the damage is. perform these feats at your own risk.

Hopefully 1700mhz band is a hidden feature in iPhone 4, supposedly the hardware in the other iPhones cannot be made compatible with it.
I don't know why people on this board would be negative about the idea of ANY additional carrier getting the iPhone. Yes, I agree that no single carrier could have handled the data demands of the iPhone, thats why everyone will get the best possible experience if the iPhone is available on as many carriers as possible.
And speaking for T-Mobile, I think that major publications have rated them to have a perfectly fine network in most metropolitan areas, sometimes even the best single carrier in a particular region.
And their plans are appreciably cheaper than AT&T. Best of all, they offer plans without a contract and without a phone subsidy where they pass on the savings to you. In other words, BYO phone, and you can get unlimited data, unlimited texting, and 500 anytime minutes for $60/month. Equivalent plan from AT&T is $85/month with 2GB a data.
Even assuming T-mob cuts data allowance to 2GB, thats still a good deal compared to AT&T. I'd love to be able to shop aggressively for an iPhone, and then save ~$300+ year on the subscription rates.
More competition can't be bad for the consumer.
