Did anyone else read the topic and say "You got that wrong! There already was a 2G iPod nano, it's the 8G one that's interesting!"
It took a few rereads before I realised they meant "2nd Generation"

No one cared until the X-Factor show made the theme for last week's songs "The Beatles". Suddenly millions of UK TV viewers cared. The long "Beatles now on iTunes" adverts aired in the breaks just increased the profile.
Plus (i could be wrong) Simon "Money Whore" Cowell has his fingers in Sony who co-own the rights to The Beatles catalogue!?
Don't quote me on that.

might return my MBP 17" and say mum said no....
wonder if i can score a freee MBP 17"
Of course you won't.
It is more likely that the whole ipad thing didn't happen either. If it did, why are there no details. Why hasn't the guy stepped up to defend the blogs for not lying. Where are the photos of the ipad with the post it note.
Apple might give something like that away to heal negative PR like the whole "oh poor woman on welfare that saved up but doesn't have a bank account to pay for anything that yelled foul cause Apple, according to their legal rights, didn't take cash for a brief time" stuff last year (and don't try to tell me that she needs good credit for a checking account with a debit card). But they aren't going to hand one to someone for a lame reason like "my wife has me whipped and said I can't have any more toys"

It really doesn't mean much to me, since I have had their entire catalog on cd since 1987...
The money they are talking about doesn't really go to the Beatles, since the Beatles were bad financial managers when they were together, they get very little of this money. They all made their fortunes after the brake up...;)

TechCrunch has posted another lengthy report (http://techcrunch.com/2011/03/28/apples-big-fall/) detailing what it is hearing about Apple's plans for the fifth-generation iPhone and iOS 5, now both rumored for release closer to a "fall" timeframe than the traditional June/July timeframe seen in past years.
Perhaps the most notable information comes at the end of the article, revealing that sources have said that Apple's April 2010 acquisition (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/28/apple-purchases-iphone-personal-assistant-company-siri/) of personal assistant software company Siri is set to bear fruit in the form of "deeply integrated" artificial intelligence (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/01/steve-jobs-on-siri-acquired-for-artificial-intelligence-technology-not-search/) and voice control for iOS 5, a change that could potentially transform the way iOS devices are used.A year ago, Apple bought Siri, a virtual personal assistant startup that had released a very cool iPhone app. The Siri team and technology are now said to be a big part of iOS 5.
The use of Siri's artificial intelligence and assistance technology is said to be deeply integrated into the OS for all the different services offered. And the team is now putting the finishing touches on the elements that will be demoed at WWDC, we hear. This tech may also be opened to developers for use in third-party apps - though that information isn't quite as concrete. The report also notes that a fall release for new iPhone hardware provides Apple with additional time to incorporate LTE 4G capabilities, speculating that a desire to add LTE may even be the reason for the shift in release schedule compared to past years.TechCrunch contributor Steve Cheney (who nailed the timing of the Verizon iPhone last year), believes that a fall iPhone 5 launch makes LTE much more likely. He currently puts the odds at zero to ten percent for LTE if the iPhone 5 launched this summer (again, not happening), 50 percent if it comes in the fall, and 100 percent if it comes in January.
A fall timeframe would give Apple a more vetted and lower power Qualcomm chip for LTE, Cheney says. When the Verizon iPhone was unveiled in January, Apple COO Tim Cook addressed the LTE issue directly. "The first generation LTE chipsets force some design compromises. Some of which we would not make," he said. If Cheney is right, that may not be such an issue later this year. The report notes that Apple waited to adopt 3G technology until is had significantly matured, opting to release the original iPhone as an EDGE-only device despite relatively widespread 3G coverage available at the time. But at that time the iPhone was a completely new concept for smartphones setting the stage to remake the industry regardless of whether it was an EDGE or 3G device. In the much larger and much more competitive smartphone market today, Android devices are already moving to LTE and Apple may not wish to wait until mid-2012 to introduce its own LTE iPhone.

Looks like nothing has changed but the processor. Gentlemen, commence your bitching.
They also doubled the RAM on both 2GHz models, and I think they upped the superdrive as well (from 4x to 6x). And put slightly bigger hard drives, but the latter isn't really interesting.
Minor upgrade, but upgrade nonetheless

Oh, I could sooooo say something here, but it would probably be considered a racist flame-bait, so I'll just steer clear of it.
But I would say that it won't be me needing that particular feature...
*mumbles something to self about this being an English-speaking country and runs out of the thread*
You probably would. I think Spanish is the world's 2nd-most spoken language. Well, don't know about Chinese... Besides, you are being America-centric here, there are markets outside the US, you know, like Spain. Reference works like Dictionaries and Thesauruses will probably be bestsellers for such a device. If I go somewhere, I could load it with a dictionary for the national language for the country, say English-Spanish. My Spanish is not good, so if it could pronounce it for me, all the better. And I know of English speakers who can't read or spell very well either. My brother's dyslexic, and yet also a programmer. The Spanish were the first to discover and explore America, you know (though 500 years after the Vikings). In Canada they're split between English and French. They're like Americans without the attitude or penchant for invading other countries.

Greed on Apple's part might be the reason. I'm sure they will wait a few months after everyone has bought the 4GB in color, then announce 8GB iPod Nanos in color.
That, or the middle size/price just sells way more than the pricier one.

It's both sad and sickening to see how many Apple fanboys are elitists who only want Apple products to be sold at upscale stores. Such fanboys want Apple products to be regarded as high-end fashion accessories and status symbols. What a shame that Apple has such a feminized culture associated with it. I miss the days when Apple products were regarded as tools for accomplishing tasks.

I don't recall massive outcry from the devs on those other platforms. Why do you think that is?
Um, the same sort of NDA that Apple had in the beta phase of their developer's program?

Nope, none of those reviews count until ZP reviews it, because he is the only person not on drugs.
My issue is more that since the downturn and so many print & web sites struggling badly, the impact of AAA advertising money on reviews is now clearer than ever.
I'm not saying that Halo: Reach isn't a great console shooter, just that all of these 11/10 frothing 'bestest EVAR' scores - particularly the ones with more nitpicks than would be present in a 8/10 review of a game without gobs of advertising money - are inherently suspect, because they are bought.

BEST BUY does not have the ipad on stock. The program they launched today - from their ad is you have to go to the store and pay $100 for a deposit so you can order a unit. They do not have any units on stock. You might as well go directly to apple.com and order from them.
They put the ipad on their front ads but do not have even a single unit on stock. Everyone waiting in line this morning here was disappointed at our local Best Buy store.
You do realize that there are over 1,000 Best Buys? You do realize that not every single one is going to have enough inventory, as supply is limited not only at Best Buy, but everywhere, including Apple.com? If the store you went to had inventory to sell (meaning they had no or few reservations) then they would sell you one. Perhaps they had none, perhaps they had some that were set aside for reservations. How would you feel if you had reserved one and then went to the store to find out they sold the product you had reserved already? The reason they offered the $100 down on a reservation is because they didn't have any left to sell you. I don't see how this is false advertising.

Don't worry about the formatting, it's just a hard drive, they're all standard.
If it is an external, just plug it in, open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, select the new drive from the list on the left, select the "Erase" tab at the top, and "erase" it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
Thanks, you saved me a lot of stress. After reading the specs and seeing it was for PC's only, I tried to cancel the order. Sorry, I'm not a tech guru. But why would they state something like that and possibly limit their sales, when all they have to say is it can be formatted to whatever system you have?

I find the timeline in the current iMovie harder to work than some of the older versions. now.
Are you aware you can change the timeline to look like imovie6 HD? My biggest gripe about iMovie 11 is no third party plugins. iMovie 6 can use them though. I'm hoping the next FCE (if there will be one) has the same power as FCP. Yeah, it will be dumbed down but I want a semi pro editor for home use.

Anyone knows if the mac pro allows us to upgrade to PCI graphics cards bought from retail stores? Will there be any driver issues? Do graphics card vendors include Mac drivers on their installation disc? Never seen one that does though..
Thx for answering. No there are not Mac drivers for cards that aren't Mac specific. So we are always in the dog house when it comes to video cards. It's tragic. :( I don't know if being on an Intel motherboard will help or not. Anyone know?

Sligthly off-topic:
Judging from history what do you thing, when would iLife '07 be available?
I am seriously considering to wait a little longer (the 1.83 model has left me strongly disappointed).
So I thought I can wait a little longer and buy when iLife 07 will be included in the purchase (to make up for the lousy specs )
iLife is updated every year at Macworld San Francisco in January. Just wait until then if you really want. I've got a bit of a feeling that we'll be seeing quite a bit of Leopard then, quite possibly even a release date since Vista is released later that month...
